MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL - The University of Minnesota announced today that its student-athletes posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 86 percent, continuing the long-term trend of GSR increases in Gopher Athletics.
The NCAA Graduation Success Rate is designed to show the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree. The report represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2004 and 2007, but excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.
Since the NCAA began releasing Graduation Success Rate figures in 2005, Gopher Athletics has improved its GSR by 19 points. The 86 percent represents continued GSR improvement for Minnesota.
"We are extremely pleased with the latest Graduation Success Rate report and the commitment our student-athletes continue to show in this area," Director of Athletics Norwood Teague said. "Academic success and degree completion are important components of our vision for Gopher Athletics and I am proud of the achievements of our student-athletes."
The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates in the report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave an institution for any reason as non-graduates from their initial school, even if they leave in good academic standing and subsequently graduate from another institution. There was good news in these numbers as well for Minnesota student-athletes, whose score of 75 percent is a six-point increase over last year's score of 69 percent.
Graduation Success Rates for Minnesota's women's programs continue to increase, with all 11 programs posting GSR figures of 80 percent or higher. Nine programs scored better than 90 percent, with soccer, golf, gymnastics, tennis and volleyball all posting perfect scores of 100 percent.
On the men's side, eight programs posted GSR rates of 80 percent or higher, with gymnastics (100), tennis (100), wrestling (95), swimming (95) and basketball (83) among the highest performing teams. Several other programs showed strong improvement.
