HOW 'BOUT THEM HAWKEYES
Last season, the Minnesota men took down Iowa 174-126 with highlights including CJ Smith sweeping the distance competition, placing first in both the 1000 free and 500 free, as well as a first-place finish from then freshman Daryl Turner in the 100 free over Derek Toomey. Minnesota enters the meet with an upstanding record against the Hawkeyes. The two conference teams have a rich history that dates back to 1920 when they had their first swimming and diving competition. Since that very first match-up, Minnesota has kept an advantage over the Hawkeyes by having a winning overall record of 48-40. In the past 12 seasons the Gophers have outscored Iowa 11-1 dating back to the 2002-03 season. The only loss came in 2011-12 when the Gophers were defeated by a score of 160.5-139.5.
On the women's side, the first meeting between Minnesota and Iowa in the swimming pool began in 1977 in the women's programs. The Golden Gophers have an advantage over the Hawkeyes with an overall winning record of 26-6-1. In the past nine seasons Minnesota remains undefeated in the conference match-ups. Last season's dual against Iowa resulted in a Minnesota victory 194-101.
