An own goal in the 23rd minute of play decided the game for the University of Minnesota women's soccer team who fell to the No. 7-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday evening at the Robbie. With the loss, the Gophers fall to 6-6-0 on the season and 3-3-0 in conference play while the Nittany Lions continue with an unblemished conference record.
Penn State lead the Gophers in shots 13-5 during the ninety minute battle which debuted the first snowflakes of the year. Minnesota earned seven corner kicks on the evening, with two dangerous attempts, but could not find the back of the net as they fell behind in the early minutes of the first half.
In the 23rd minute of play, a loose ball on a miscue from a Minnesota defender crossed the goal line resulting in an own goal by Minnesota to put Penn State on the board, 1-0. Minnesota continued to fight through the entirety of the 67 remaining minutes in full time to score an equalizer.
Despite five shots fired by the Gophers, there were no shots on target in the match.
Sophomore GK Tarah Hobbs made four saves on the evening to keep the Nittany Lions lead to just one but the Gophers were unable to score before the time expired.
This is the second time this season the Gophers have been shutout, the first coming at the hands of Iowa on Sept. 20.
Minnesota will host Ohio State on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
