Gophers Play to 1-1 Draw with OSU

The battle between the University of Minnesota women's soccer team and Ohio State University ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. With the draw, the Gophers move to 6-6-1 on the season with a 3-3-1 mark in conference play.
Minnesota was the first to strike as senior Olivia Schultz scored her fourth goal of the season in the 11th minute of play. Junior Haley Helverson served a ball from the left near side to set Schultz in perfect position to score.
Ohio State countered in the 33rd minute of play as Alexis Degler found the back of net after her left-footed strike ricocheted off a Minnesota defender to even the score at one all.
The Gophers would tally five shots on goal during the second half as they fought to take the lead including two from sophomore Simone Kolander and senior Katie Thyken. Sophomore Tarah Hobbs had two important saves as Ohio State's Ellyn Gruber fired a shot from 10 yards out in the 54th minute of play and again in the 78th minute.
As full time expired, the score was tied at 1 with Ohio State leading in shots, 14-13. The Buckeyes came out in the first OT period on fire as they barrelled six shots on goal at Hobbs. Hobbs met each challenge, tallying six saves in the ten minute time span, to keep Minnesota alive. Her most noteable saves were back-to-back on Nichelle Prince breakaway.
Neither team was able to notch a shot on goal in the second overtime period to leave the game tied at one. This is the first draw of the season for each team.
Hobbs gathered nine saves on the afternoon to bring her season total to 54.
Minnesota will host Nebraska on Thursday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium before hitting the road to match up with Illinois on Sunday afternoon.
GOPHER STAND OUT PERFORMANCES
Junior Haley Helverson continued her successful weekend as she tallied an assist on Olivia Schultz's fourth goal of the season. She came up big for the Gophers as she helped defuse numerous scoring chances for the Buckeyes.
Simone Kolander had five shots in the match up while Katie Thyken had three, two on target.

Minnesota hosts Nebraska on Thursday evening at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
