Thyken Named Academic All-District Honoree

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Senior midfielder Katie Thyken was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team on Thursday afternoon. The All-District teams are selected each year by CoSIDA. The award is the third for Thyken in her time with the Maroon and Gold.
An Eden Prairie, Minn. native and mechanical engineering major, Thyken has upheld an impressive 3.895 cummulative grade point average throughout her time in the University of Minnesota's College of Science and Engineering. Her dedication in the classroom has earned her two Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2012 and 2013 as well as being named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar for the 2013-14 academic year. Thyken has also received NSCAA Scholar-Athlete Third Team laurels. Thyken will graduate in the spring of 2015.
Thyken has also excelled on the field for the Maroon and Gold as she was the leading offensive player in 2013 with seven goals and three assists for a team best 17 points matching her career best from 2012. In her four years with the Gophers, Thyken has appeared in 73 games, scored 16 goals, recorded 13 assists for a total of 45 points. Thyken is a two-time captain for the Gophers and has started every game this season.
The senior will appear in her final regular season match against Northwestern on Friday, Oct. 31 before traveling to the Big Ten Tournament next weekend where the team hopes to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the second time in as many years.
