MINNEAPOLIS - In preparation the Gophers' series at Ohio State this weekend, sophomore Kelsey Cline looks to her experience and lessons she has learned from her first season to make this series a success. With her ability to play defense and forward, Cline is ready for the battle she believes the Buckeyes are capable of bringing.
Gopher Sports: Why did you decide to come to Minnesota to play hockey?
Kelsey Cline: I decided to come to the University of Minnesota because Minnesota is known to be a great program. Growing up in Minnesota and playing high school here, everyone's goal is to play at the U. When I had an opportunity to tour, I saw the great culture here and met the coaches and the players. After that, I knew that Minnesota was the right fit.
GS: What is the greatest thing you have learned after your first season on the team?
KC: I've learned how to deal with tough things in life. Not everything goes perfectly, and it's important to learn how to deal with that.
GS: Having an entire season under your belt, how it this season different from last?
KC: A new group of freshman brings in different personalities. We have special things about this year that we didn't have last year. The group of girls this year is great. If we keep working together throughout the season, I think we will have a lot of success.
GS: How has your ability to play defense and forward enhanced your skills throughout the game?
KC: Being able to think about what the person in the other position is thinking helps a lot. If I'm playing defense, I can think about what the forward might be thinking and vice versa. Whichever position I'm playing, I've learned a lot from my coaches as to how to put it all together.
GS: How will you and the team prepare for Ohio State?
KC: Ohio State has a good team, and I think a lot of people underestimate them. Their home rink is a tough environment, and they always give their best effort against us. I think if we practice at high intensity and battle hard, we will be ready to go.
GS: What is your favorite part about traveling to an away series?
KC: My favorite part is the actual traveling to get there. It's fun to travel somewhere new and bond with your teammates.
