Final Stats

The University of Minnesota earned a five-set win, tonight, over Maryland in College Park, Md. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 17-11 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten.  

Minnesota was paced by career-high nights from Daly Santana and Molly Lohman. Santana had a career-best 23 kills and hit a team-best .383. Santana had 23 kills, five errors in 47 swings, while also adding six digs and an ace. Lohman added a career-high 10 blocks, including six in the crucial fifth set. She also had five kills in 10 attempts.Alyssa Goehner had nine kills, followed by Sarah Wilhite with eight. Erica Handley and Katie Schau had 26 and 18 assists, while Dalianliz Rosado had a team-high 13 digs, while accomplishing two kills. 

As a team, Minnesota hit .279 to Maryland's .181 and out blocked the Terps 15.5-13.0. Minnesota held a 56-41 dig advantage in the win. 

Minnesota returns to the Sports Pavilion confines Saturday night as they face the No. 16 Purdue Boilermakers. Match time is set for 7 p.m. 

Set 1: Maryland took a 1-0 lead with a 25-21 first set win. Minnesota erased an early 9-5 deficit and came back to tie the set at 13. The two teams exchanged points until Maryland went up 21-19 over the Gophers. Minnesota, however, tied the set at 21 on a Maryland attack error and a kill by Wilhite. Maryland called a timeout and came out of the break with two points at 23-21 as Minnesota called a timeout. The Terps, however, were able to finish off the set on a Minnesota error and a kill for a 1-0 lead. Maryland hit .351 in the first set and had two blocks. Minnesota hit .296 and had 12 digs. 

Set 2: The Gophers came back to tie the match, 1-1, on a 25-20 second set win. Minnesota erased an early 9-3 deficit to come back and tie the set at 13-13 on a kill by Lohman and a ball-handling error on Maryland. Minnesota went up 18-15 on back-to-back kills from Paige Tapp and a 20-17 lead from Santana to force Maryland to call a timeout. Minnesota, however, would close the set and tie the match with two kills from Santana, her eighth and ninth of the match. The Gophers had four blocks in the set and bettered its first set efficiency, hitting .324 in the set. 

Set 3: Minnesota went up 25-14 on a third-set win as the Gophers hit .414 in the set, while it held the Terps to .138. Minnesota jumped out to a 10-6 lead and never looked back. A block from Paige Tapp and Adrianna Nora pushed the lead to 14-8, while Rosado added a kill for a 16-10 cushion. A kill from Santana put Minnesota up 22-12, while Goehner had a kill from the 25th point and the 2-1 lead. In the third set alone, Santana had seven kills in 13 attempts. 

Set 4: The Terps would fire back with a 25-21 fourth set win and added seven blocks to Minnesota's four. Maryland jumped out to a 12-6 lead and later an 18-13 lead. Minnesota came back to cut the lead to 20-19 on an ace by Santana. However, the Terps earned a kill from Ashleigh Crutcher to later go up 23-21. The Terps would send the match to a game five on back-to-back blocks for a 25-21 fourth set win. Minnesota had nine kills and nine errors in 32 attempts, while Maryland had 14 kills, six errors and 38 attempts to hit .211. 

Set 5: Lohman recorded six of her 10 blocks in the fifth set to help the Gophers to a 15-7 fifth-set win. Santana had five kills in seven attempts to hit .571 in the fifth. Despite Maryland earning the first two points of the set, Minnesota came back and rattled off five straight, four of which were kills from Santana and a block from Nora and Lohman. Maryland called a timeout as Minnesota was up 5-2, but the Gophers came out of the break with another block from Lohman and Nora. Minnesota jumped out to a 9-4 lead with another two blocks, and 11-6 on the kill from Wilhite. Minnesota closed out the match with a triple block from Lohman/Hannah Tapp/Wilhite, a Wilhite kill, a Goehner kill and a Rosado kill to end the match. The Gophers hit .500 in the fifth, while the Terps were at -.059.
