MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gopher women's hockey team is set to take on Minnesota State this weekend in a home-and-home series. Junior Brook Garzone discusses the Mavericks and reflects on her time as a Gopher so far.
Gopher Sports: What are your thoughts on the season so far?
Brook Garzone: This season is going well. We've had some rough patches in the beginning, but we are starting to bounce back. We are still a new team and are trying to figure out everyone's playing styles so it has been an adjustment.
GS: How have you and the team prepared for Minnesota State?
BG: Although Minnesota State hasn't won a game yet this season, it will only make them that much tougher and more eager to win. I like to ignore the statistics. It's important for us not to be over-confident. We have overlooked teams in the past, and it hasn't resulted in the best outcome for us. Minnesota State is still a strong team despite their record.
GS: How do you feel about the home-and-home series this weekend?
BG: I like playing home-and-home because we can stick to our own routines and sleep in our own beds.
GS: Now being an upperclassman on the team, how have your leadership skills changed?
BG: I've learned a lot since I've been here. I see some of the younger players going though the same things I went through, so I like to help them out. The freshmen are starting to step into their roles and are starting to feel more comfortable, which is very important to us as a team.
GS: What do you enjoy most about your team?
BG: Overall, our team is very close and I have become really good friends with everyone. I believe this makes us so much stronger both on and off the ice.
GS: What is your favorite part about being a Gopher?
BG: It has been my dream since I was little to be a Gopher. Fulfilling my dream has felt amazing. The atmosphere between the players, coaches and everyone on the staff is great, and there is never a dull moment. I love everything about being a Gopher. I can't imagine being anywhere else.
Puck drop between Minnesota and Minnesota State is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Mankato, Minn., and 4 p.m. on Saturday at Ridder Arena.
