TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (GopherSports.com) - Junior Aaron Bartnik officially closed out the 2014 University of Minnesota men's cross country campaign on Saturday afternoon with a 135th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Bartnik clocked a 31:50.9 in his second career 10-kilometer race after earning an individual berth to the NCAA Championships at the NCAA Midwest Regional earlier this month.
"Aaron really had an outstanding season for us this year, and it was great to see him in the NCAA Championships field after all the work he has put in for us," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "He's a great kid all-around, and we're looking forward to seeing him build off of this for his senior season next year."
Bartnik's resurgent junior season comes to a close with numerous accolades and noteworthy performances. After battling injuries throughout his first three years with the program, Bartnik capped off the season as the first Gopher to earn First Team All-Big Ten honors since 2010 with his fourth-place showing at the Big Ten Cross Country Championship and then added All-Region honors at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Minnesota's lone competitor on Saturday, Bartnik led the Gophers in each of his six races this season.
Oregon's Edward Cheserek won his second-straight national title with a time of 30:19.4 while Colorado took the team title for the second-straight year with 65 total points.
