Gophers Finish Strong at Grand Prix

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - It was the final night of competition in the Gophers home pool at the 2014 Arena Grand Prix at Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers raced against the likes of Olympians Conor Dwyer, Tyler Clary, Elizabeth Beisel and more. Tonight's events included the 1650 freestyle, 200 IM, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 400 medley relay.
Kiera Janzen led the Gophers in the 1650 freestyle, placing third in the event with a 16:03.23. Three other Golden Gophers were represented in championship final. Sophomore Breanne Siwicki picked up fifth place with a time of 16:18.20 followed by Brooke Lorentzen (16:25.72) and Sam Harding (16:26.71) for sixth and seventh place.
CJ Smith finished fourth in the men's 1650 free with a time of 15:07.51. Logan Redondo placed 14th with a 15:45.83.
Senior Tori Simenec led Minnesota in the women's 200 IM, finishing sixth with a time of 1:58.50. Freshman Brooke Zeiger went 2:00.15 for eighth place. Breaststroker Kierra Smith took home the top finish in the B final with a 1:59.87 for ninth place.
Jakub Maly powered his way to a fourth-place finish in the men's 200 IM with a time of 1:47.22. Andrew Hartbarger finished with a 1:50.25 for 14th.
Freshman Brooke Zeiger finished with a time of 1:58.65 in the 200 backstroke for sixth place.
Carl Newenhouse finished fifth in the men's 200 back, finishing with a time of 1:45.40. Fellow senior Chris Johnson topped the B final with a 1:47.24 to take ninth. Jack Tribble (1:48.86) and Jon Thielen (1:50.28) finished eleventh and 16th consecutively.
Junior Lauren Votava led Minnesota in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.31 for fourth place, she was followed by Becca Weiland (49.58) for fifth. Sophomore Maddie Hoch finished seventh with a time of 49.90. Allison Schumacher finished 15th with a time of 50.22.
Daryl Turner led the Gophers to an eighth place finish in the men's 100 free. Turner finished with a time of 43.55. Sophomore Paul Fair finished eleventh with a time of 44.49.
The Minnesota Gophers stayed perfect in relays by claiming the gold in both the men's and women's 400 medley relay. Tori Simenec, Kierra Smith, Becca Weiland and Lauren Votava combined for time of 3:37.42 for the win. On the men's side, Golden Gophers Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Ryan Miksch totaled a 3:16.11 for the win.
