Gophers Fall in Semifinals

The University of Minnesota women's soccer team fell to the No. 11-ranked Wisconsin Badgers on Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament. With the loss, the Golden Gophers were eliminated from the conference tournament and will have to await their fate as the NCAA Tournament field is announced on Monday afternoon. Minnesota falls to 11-9-1 on the season.
During the first half of play, Wisconsin led the charge with 12 shots. The lone goal was scored in the 9th minute of play by McKenna Meuer assisted by Brianna Stelzer to give the Badgers the 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission. Sophomore goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs kept the Gophers alive with seven saves in the first half.
Through the 90 minutes of play, the Gophers restraining line and Hobbs faced a combined 22 shots while searching for an equalizer. The Maroon and Gold tallied six shots on the match including three from midfielder Josee Stiever. Not one of the Gophers six shots were on frame.
GOPHER STAND OUT PERFORMANCES
Sophomore midfielder Josee Stiever recorded half of the Maroon and Gold's six shots. Stiever has been a force to be reckoned with during the season tallying a team-leading six goals and five assists for a total of 17 points on the season.
Haley Helverson, Taylor Wodnick and Kellie McGahn all tallied a shot each.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs collected nine saves in the match for a season total of 96.
WHAT IS NEXT:
The Maroon and Gold will find out if they are part of the 64-team field for the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon. Teams will play in the first round of competition next weekend.
