COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (GopherSports.com) - Matthew Jergenson picked up his first career win on Friday afternoon at the 2014 Falll Finale as the University of Minnesota men's cross country team posted a perfect score of 15 to win the event.
A junior from Caledonia, Minn., Jergenson clocked a 25:13 to win the Fall Finale as the third-straight Gopher to win the meet following Aaron Bartnik in 2013 and Blayne Dulian in 2012. Jergenson paced a dominating performance by the Gophers as the team tallied the top five finishes on Friday afternoon among attached runners and added another pair of unattached competitors in the top eight.
"We had a great showing by our guys today, and I was really happy with the way our team stepped up and showed what they could do," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "Jergenson really set the tone for us today. It was great to see him do well after how hard he's worked during his career."
Matt Welch finished second for the Maroon & Gold with a time of 25:25 for the eight-kilometer course while Cole O'Brien came in fourth overall at 25:38. Derek Wiebke crossed the finish line in 25:41 to finish fifth overall while Eric Colvin came in seventh at 26:21 to close out Minnesota's scoring for the meet.
Running as unattached competitors, Sam Carlson finished third overall at the meet with a time of 25:38 while Isaiah Barlow clocked a 26:51 to finish eighth.
The Gophers return to action next Friday at the 2014 NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill.
