Swatek Leads Gophers at Rocky's Run

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - Redshirt junior Stacey Swatek led the Golden Gophers in a windy, cool 6K race at Rocky's Run at Les Bolstad Course Saturday morning. Swatek was the sixth female finisher in 23:54
Marnie Kinnaird was the second Gopher in 24:06 as the 10th female finisher in the open 6K. Fellow Gophers Melissa Cabak (11th, 24:10), Chelsea Pettit (12th, 24:13), Andie Zeman (13th, 24:18) and Rebecca Rethwisch (14th, 24:19) earned top-15 finishes as well.
The 34th annual running of Rocky's Run had 85 male finishers and 62 female finishers, led by overall winner Dan Greeno of Richfield, Minn., in 19;13. Lauren Rice of Minneapolis was the women's champion in 23:01.
Six Gophers raced unattached at Rocky's Run, led by overall female runner-up Emily Castanias (23:13). Patty O'Brien (fourth, 23:22), Courtney Alama (fifth, 23:45), Molly Eastman (eighth, 23:57), Delaney Sinnen (16th, 24:28) and Madeline Brighouse Glueck (27th, 26:15) also ran unattached.
Rocky's Run was founded in 1981 to honor former Gopher runner Rochelle "Rocky" Racette, who died in a car accident that fall at the age of 22. While at the University of Minnesota, Racette was an All-American in track & field and cross country and champion of the Big Ten and Drake Relays 5,000-meter titles. Racette's legacy lives on through the memory of those who knew her, and through Rocky's Run and the scholarship for which it raises money.
Minnesota will travel to Peoria, Ill., for the 2014 NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Bradley University on Friday, Nov. 14. The Gophers look to secure their 10th-straight NCAA national championship appearance.
The top two teams from each of nine regional meets automatically advance to the 2014 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 22. The remaining 13 spots at the national meet will be filled by teams receiving at-large bids.
