Maly, Smith Head to Qatar

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn - Two Golden Gophers are set to represent their home countries at the 12th FINA World Championships (25m) from Wednesday, Dec. 3 through Sunday, Dec. 7 in Doha, Qatar. Sophomore Jakub Maly will swim for his home country of Austria, while junior Kierra Smith represents Canada.
Minnesota's breaststroke headliner Smith is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation in the 200y breast after posting a time of 2:05.12 at the Arena Grand Prix at Minneapolis a few weeks ago. She also holds the No. 7 ranking in the 200m breast worldwide.
Jakub Maly is coming off a successful rookie season with the Golden Gophers. He was named the 2014 B1G Freshman of the Year last spring. This season, Maly has been instrumental in several events including the 400 IM.
The duo will also be joined by recent University of Minnesota graduate Josh Hall, competing for the Philippines.
