University of Minnesota sophomore center Amanda Zahui B. was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll Tuesday after leading the Gophers to wins over Liberty and Central Michigan last weekend at the Subway Classic. Zahui was named the Subway Classic Most Valuable Player after averaging 22.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 6.0 blocks per game during the two-day event.
Along with scoring 44 points over the two-game stretch, Zahui shot .586 from the floor and .909 from the free throw line, while averaging 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals per game. The sophomore scored 19 points in the second half, which included the last 10 points of the contest to secure the win.
On the year, Zahui is averaging a double-double with 15.6 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, while ranking second in the Big Ten with a 4.1 blocks-per-game average. She has eight double-doubles on the season and 26 for her career, a mark that ranks fifth all-time at Minnesota. Her 154 career blocks rank third in program history, while she is just 13 defensive rebounds away from breaking into the Gophers' all-time top-10 in the category.
Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell was named the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week, with Iowa's Melissa Dixon and Nebraska's Rachel Theriot joining Zahui on the honor roll.
Minnesota will open conference play when it hosts Nebraska on Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on BTN. Fans can listen to the call on 1500 ESPN. Gopher great Lindsay Whalen will be in attendance and will sign autographs for fans prior to tip-off.
