Maxx Williams has been named a Capital One Academic All-American. He is Minnesota's first Academic All-American since Greg Eslinger and Mark Losli earned second-team honors in 2005, and the first Academic All-America First Team selection since Justin Conzemius in 1994.

In the classroom, Williams is a communication studies major with a 3.44 GPA. He earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition in 2013.

On the field, Williams is one the best tight ends in the country. The redshirt sophomore is a John Mackey Award finalist and was named the Big Ten's Kwalick-Clark Tight End of the Year earlier this week.

Williams leads Minnesota with 29 receptions for 471 yards and seven touchdowns with a bowl game still to be played. He holds the school record for touchdowns by a tight end in a season, and ranks fifth in season receiving yards for a tight end.

Fourteen Minnesota football student-athletes have earned a combined 17 Academic All-America honors since 1956. The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) started the Academic All-America program in 1952. Capital One began partnering with CoSIDA to sponsor the program in 2011.
