Gophers Fall to Boilermakers, 63-42

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's basketball team (17-10, 6-7) fell to No. 21/21 Purdue (19-7, 9-5), 63-42, at Williams Arena on Thursday evening. The loss broke a four-game league winning streak for the Gophers.
Despite Kayla Hirt putting the Gophers on the board first with a quick layup to start the game, they were unable to regain the lead again as the Boilermakers would go on to lead by as much as 23 points during the game.
Before an 8-0 run from Minnesota, the Gophers were down 21-6 with nine minutes left in the first half. Sari Noga would go on to make two three-pointers to jumpstart the run but ultimately the Gophers would not be able to catch the Boilermakers in the first half as they went into the locker room down by ten, 33-23.
During the first twenty-five minutes of play, Rachel Banham would tally only two points for the Gophers. While Purdue would go on to lead by 23 with four minutes to go in the second half.
The short seven person roster for the Gophers was lead by Noga who totaled 15 points, four rebounds and one assist followed by Amanda Zahui B. who had 10 points and three rebounds on the evening.
Leading scorer, Banham, was quiet tonight as she posted only 8 points toward the Gophers final score of 42 despite playing the most minutes for the team with 37. Hirt, Micaella Riche and Joanna Hedstrom also contributed for the Gophers points wise as Mikayla Bailey had two boards and two assists for Minnesota.
Over half of Minnesota's points were in the paint and six points were scored off of turnovers while Purdue had 24 points in the paint and 15 points from turnovers. The Boilermakers leading scorer Courtney Moses scored 27 points toward their 63 points.
The Maroon and Gold finished the game with a .268 field percentage (15-56) and .158 shooting percentage (3-19) from three-point range while going 9-for-12 from the free throw line.
Before the game began, head coach Pam Borton and Zahui B. were honored for their accomplishments this season. At Northwestern, Borton secured her 300th-career victory while Zahui B. now holds the single-season record for blocks with 74.
The Golden Gophers will travel to East Lansing, Mich. to take on the Michigan State Spartans on Monday, Feb. 23 at 6:00 p.m. CT.
