Mendez First, Gophers Second on Day 1 at Iowa

Freshman Jose Mendez is in first and the University of Minnesota men's golf team is in second after one day of the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. The Golden Gophers are looking for their third tournament win, while Mendez is looking for his second individual win in a row.
With a 2-under-par 36-hole score of 574, the Gophers are six strokes behind host Iowa after one day of play at Finkbine GC in Iowa City. Mendez is 7-under, two shots ahead of Washington State's Blake Snyder.
Mendez followed up a first-round 70 with a 5-under 67 in the afternoon round. He made 10 birdies to three bogeys on the day.
Minnesota has three players in the top 25. Jon DuToit (-1) is tied for seventh, Alex Gaugert (+3) is tied for 19th and Jon Trasamar (+4) is tied for 25th. Matt Rachey is one stroke behind Trasamar, tied for 32nd place.
The final round will begin at 9 a.m. CDT Sunday with a shotgun start.
