After the Golden Gophers took the opening game of the series, Indiana rebounded with a 7-3 win on Friday. Minnesota (27-21, 13-10 Big Ten) committed four errors and the Hoosiers (37-13, 20-3 Big Ten) committed three on a rainy night at Bart Kaufman Field. Each team tallied seven hits.
Indiana broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run fourth and held the lead from there. Dustin DeMuth and Nick Ramos each had two hits for the Hoosiers, while Jordan Smith hit 2-for-4 for Minnesota.
The Hoosiers scored first on a grounder to third that scored Scott Donley in the second. Minnesota quickly tied the game with help from an error in the third. Austin Athmann reached on a two-base error and scored on Smith's double to right-center.
The top of the fourth started with a diving catch by Smith to rob Donley of an extra-base hit. But a double by Brad Hartong started a two-out rally. Nick Ramos hit an RBI single following a Will Nolden walk, then two runs scored on a throwing error to make it 4-1.
Indiana added another unearned run in the fifth. DeMuth singled in Donley, who reached on a dropped ball in the outfield. Ben Meyer (4-4), who would take the loss, was relieved by Brian Glowicki after 4 2/3 innings. Only two of his five runs were earned.
Christian Morris (5-3) earned the win in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters, and only one of his four runs was earned.
Minnesota took advantage of an error in the next inning to cut the lead to 5-2. Dan Motl singled and stole two bases. The throw to third on his second steal sailed into the outfield, allowing him to score.
Aided by passed balls and a Ramos double in the eighth, the Hoosiers stretched the lead to 7-2. Minnesota loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but could only score one run. Smith led off with a single and scored on a grounder by Dan Olinger.
The Gophers and Hoosiers' final game of the regular season will begin at 2:05 p.m. CT Saturday and will air on BTN.
