Paced by individual leader Jose Mendez, the University of Minnesota men's golf team is tied for second after the first 36 holes of the Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Indiana.

The team race is close, with the top four teams within two strokes of each other. The Gophers and Illinois are one stroke behind Purdue. The Boilermakers shaved two strokes off their morning round of 298 to finish 18 over on the day with a combined score of 594.

The Gophers led after the first round by two strokes with a score of 295 (+7). Mendez carded a 3-under 69, the lowest of the day, to take a two-shot lead individually.

At 1 under, Mendez holds a one-stroke lead over Purdue's Philippe Schweitzer. The Gopher freshman turned in a 74 in the afternoon round.

Jon Trasamar and Jon DuToit are tied for 16th. Trasamar's 74 and 76, and DuToit's two 75s, put the pair at 6 over.

Alex Gaugert shot a 75 in the afternoon after posting a 77 in the first round. He is tied for 22nd. Tyler Lowenstein (+13) is tied for 50th.

Saturday's round will begin at 8 a.m. CDT.
