When I'm not in the pool, a lot of my summer is spent volunteering with my teammates at various events and organizations in the Twin Cities. Most recently for the M Club golf outing and Playworks.
Last week some of the Gopher men and women swimmers went out to volunteer the M Club golf outing. The M Club is the University of Minnesota's student-athlete alumni organization that recognizes the Gopher alumni community. The club puts on a golf outing every year in June to help raise money for their various campaigns.
Swimmers Devin Ste. Marie, Jessica Plant, Jakub Maly, Garin Marlow, Alex Cisneros and I were able to help escort M Club members to registration, sell raffle tickets, sell t-shirts and also sell contest tickets.
Even though it was a cold and windy day, the Gopher swimmers had a blast at the M Club's golf outing by helping out with the M Club and interacting with former student-athletes!
On Friday, Gopher swimmers had the opportunity to go out and play kickball with the Playworks organization. Playworks is an organization in the Twin Cities that has volunteers that go to local elementary schools to play with kids at recess and teach them about living an active lifestyle.
My teammates Heidi Busack, Chris Johnson, Devin Ste. Marie, and I - along with other student-athletes went out to the fields to play kickball to raise awareness about the Playworks organization.
After a day of playing out in the sun, the Gophers ended their day as the Playworks kickball tournament champions!
Volunteering has been a large part of my time as a student-athlete at the U. At the 2014 Golden Goldys our men's team was recognized for their community service, which shows the efforts swimming and diving is making in our community.
