Former Golden Gophers pitcher Glen Perkins earned the save as the American League won the MLB All-Star Game 5-3 at Target Field. It was the Twins closer's second time chosen to the All-Star roster, but first time appearing in an All-Star Game.
Perkins, pitching to Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki, retired three National League batters in order in the ninth inning to earn the save. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Perkins is the third pitcher to earn an All-Star Game save in his home ballpark.
In 2013, the left-hander became the seventh former Gopher selected to an All-Star roster. Now all seven have seen All-Star Game action. Dick Siebert, who would go on to coach the Gophers, also played in an All-Star Game during his pro career.
