As we head into the offseason, GopherSports.com will look ahead to the 2014-15 Gopher women's golf season with Q&A sessions with our three incoming freshmen - Heather Ciskowski, Sabrine Garrison and Celia Kuenster. We continue the series with our second new student-athlete - Sabrine Garrison.
GopherSports.com: What made you decide on playing collegiate golf at the University of Minnesota?
Sabrine Garrison: I was drawn by the strong academics and the great coaches.
GS: Tell us a little about yourself outside of golf. What do you like to do when you aren't on the course?
SG: I like to play a variety of sports as well as spend time with my friends and family.
GS: What are you most looking forward to about college?
SB: I'm looking forward to playing in a team environment and competing amongst the best golfers. I am also excited to improve my game and take it to the next level.
GS: Any idea what you plan on studying?
SB: I am planning on majoring in neuroscience in the College of Biological Sciences.
GS: When did you start playing golf?
SB: I had been introduced to the game at a young age, and played occasionally with my dad until the age of 12. I recall very well my first tournament experience at the age of 13, which was a bit of a shock playing against much older girls. From there, I started taking the game more seriously.
GS: What's your favorite club in your bag and why?
SB: I like my pitching wedge. It is club that I feel confident with and find myself hitting the most on the range.
GS: What do you feel is the strongest aspect of your golf game?
SB: I think my calm demeanor as well as my course management
GS: What is your favorite sports memory and why?
SB: Playing the Callaway Junior Worlds was an incredible opportunity to play amongst some of the best juniors in the world, and is one of many favorite sports memories. I went in with a goal to make the cut and accomplished this by playing four of my most consistent rounds in competition. Having the chance to play such a beautiful and challenging course, as well as competing and travelling with my best friend made the trip very special.
GS: Who is in your dream foursome?
SB: Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam, and Jack Nicklaus.
GS: What do you have planned between now and when you arrive on campus next fall? (Any big tournaments you are playing in, fun trips, obviously graduating, etc.)
SB: In the next few months I will be travelling to many tournaments with the Canadian Development Team. I will be participating in the Women's Westerns in Pennsylvania in June. Following that I will be travelling to many Amateur and Junior events in Canada, including the Canadian Women's Amateur.
