MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's cross country program doesn't kick off the 2014 season until the Oz Memorial early next month, however the Gophers received some good news today during training camp near Lake Belle Taine.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has ranked the Maroon & Gold eighth in the preseason Midwest Regional Team Rankings, announced today by the organization.

Steve Plasencia's 19th season as head of the Gopher men's cross country program will see an impressive mix of returners and newcomers competing to represent the University of Minnesota. The Gophers are scheduled to run in 10 meets over the course of the coming fall with the 29th annual Roy Griak Invitational highlighting the campaign on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.

USTFCCCA Regional Cross Country Rankings are determined subjectively by a single member coach in each respective region. The regional representative is tasked with weighing returning team strength with current-season results in determining predicted team finishes at the NCAA Regional Championships.

The USTFCCCA's preseason national poll will be released on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
