MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - University of Minnesota junior Aaron Bartnik has been named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week after leading the Gophers to a team win last Saturday at the UC Riverside Invitational. The Big Ten Conference announced the accolade on Tuesday morning.
A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Bartnik set a new personal eight-kilometer record last weekend with his time of 24:07.1 and finished second overall in the race. The finish is his second best as a Gopher after winning the 2013 Fall Finale as a redshirt sophomore. This is Bartnik's first career Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor.
Bartnik was one of eight Gophers to post new personal records at the UC Riverside Ag/Ops Course in Riverside, Calif. Minnesota put three runners in the top 10 and six runners in the top 25 to pace all 39 teams in the tournament. The Maroon & Gold totaled 43 points for their first team win of the season.
The Gopher return to action with the 29th Annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.
