Minnesota freshman quarterback Chris Streveler was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after his 161-yard rushing performance in a 24-7 win against San Jose State on Saturday. He shares the honor with Indiana linebacker Tegray Scales.
Streveler, played in his fourth career game and made his first career start against the Spartans, led Minnesota to its third victory of the season. Streveler rushed 18 times for 161 yards and scored one touchdown, as he plunged into the end zone from the 1-yard line with no time left on the clock in the second quarter. His touchdown - and subsequent point-after attempt from Ryan Santoso - gave the Gophers a 17-7 lead.
Streveler's 161 rushing yards are the third-most every by a Gopher quarterback. Former Minnesota quarterback and current Minnesota Viking tight end Marqueis Gray ran for a school record 171 yards against Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 17, 2011. Gray also rushed for 167 yards versus Illinois on Nov. 26, 2011.
Streveler is the second Gopher to be recognized by the league this year, as David Cobb was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the week on Sept. 8 after rushing for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns against Middle Tennessee.
Streveler is the first Gopher to be named Big Ten Freshman of the Week since Sept. 23, 2013, when Mitch Leidner was honored after his performance in a 43-24 win against San Jose State. In that game, Leidner rushed 24 times for 151 yards and four touchdowns.
