Linebackers Jack Lynn (left) and Damien Wilson are two big reasons why the Gopher defense has not allowed a point in nine of 16 quarters this year.

Five Things You Need To Know

1. Minesota heads to Michigan on Saturday, as the two teams will battle for one of the best rivalry trophies in all of college football: The Little Brown Jug. The Jug, unbeknownst to either team, was first played for in 1903 as Michigan mistakenly left it in Minneapolis after the two teams tied 6-6. Minnesota's custodian Oscar Munson found the jug the next day and took it to L.J. Cooke, who was in charge of the athletic department. Michigan wrote Cooke a letter asking for the jug back, to which Cooke replied, "If you want it back, you'll have to win it back." And with that, the tradition of The Little Brown Jug was born. The Gophers last won the jug in 2005, when they beat Michigan 23-20 on a last-second field goal in Ann Arbor. Heading into Saturday, the Wolverines have won the last six meetings between the two schools and and own a 69-22-3 record against the Gophers when The Little Brown Jug is on the line.

2. The Gophers allowed only seven points to San Jose State in their 24-7 win last Saturday. It was the least amount of points Minnesota allowed since it won 17-3 at Illinois on Nov. 20, 2012. It was also the sixth time Minnesota allowed 10 points or less to an opponent under Coach Kill. Opponents are averaging 20.2 points-per-game against Minnesota this year, but the Gopher defense has put together stretches where it has been difficult to score on. Minnesota has played 16 quarters and has held opponents scoreless in nine of those quarters. Minnesota did not allow any first-half points against Eastern Illinois and Middle Tennessee and allowed only six second-half points at TCU. The Gophers have allowed 13 points (two field goals and one touchdown) in their last six quarters of play.

3. David Cobb has started 10 games (final six of 2013 and first four of 2014) in his career and has rushed for 1,264 yards (average 126.4 per game) and six touchdowns in those games. He enters the weekend with 1,806 career rushing yards on 340 carries in 25 games. If he reaches 2,000 yards for his career he would become the 14th Gopher to do so and first since Duane Bennett, who played in 50 games from 2007-11 and ended his career with 2,126 yards on 526 carries.

4. If Chris Streveler starts at Michigan, it would mark the fourth straight time the Gophers would start a freshman quarterback at Michigan. Mitch Leidner started for the Gophers in 2013, while Max Shortell started in 2011 and Adam Weber in 2007. The last non-freshman starter at quarterback for the Gophers at Michigan was Bryan Cupito in 2005. That year, 2005, was also the last time Minnesota beat Michigan.

5. Minnesota and Michigan coaches will wear Coach To Cure MD patches to help raise awareness for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which is a disease that affects approximately one out of every 3,500 boys. There is no cure for it. The cause is especially meaningful to Gopher defensive back coach Jay Sawvel. Sawvel never met his brother-in-law, Steven Rowe, who passed away from Duchenne at the age of 21 in 2000.
