Gophers Win in First Big Ten Match

The No. 17 University of Minnesota defeated Ohio State Wednesday night in five sets, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 27-29 and 15-12 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Golden Gophers improve to 11-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Big Ten. Minnesota plays again at 7 p.m. CT.
Minnesota was led by Sarah Wilhite, who had a triple double (10 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks), while Adrianna Nora hit .400 and had 13 kills in 25 swings. Daly Santana had 17 kills, and Katie Schau had 36 assists and 10 digs. Paige Tapp collected a career-high 11 blocks. Minnesota outblocked the Buckeyes 19-14 and hit .225 to .210.
Set 1: Ohio State took the first set, 25-21 when it just .185 to Minnesota's .034. After a tie score of 16-16, OSU went on a 4-0 run. Minnesota would close the gap to 21-19, but the Buckeyes would push the set to 24-20 with a kill from Luisa Schirmer and Katie Mitchell won the set on a kill for the 25-21 final. Minnesota had eight errors in the set to OSU's six, while both teams had three blocks.
Set: 2: Minnesota came back to tie the match, with a 25-23 second set win. The Gophers improved their hitting clip to .344 in the second set and added five blocks. As the two teams were tied at 12, Minnesota went on a 4-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. The Buckeyes took a timeout and responded with a point, but the Gophers would later take a 20-15 lead on a kill from Santana. Minnesota went up 22-18 on a Paige Tapp kill, but the Buckeyes came back to bring the set to 22-20 as the Gophers took a timeout. Minnesota went up 23-21 on another Paige Tapp kill, while a Buckeye service error put it to set point. The Gophers would close out the set on a Wilhite kill to tie the match, 1-1.
Set 3: Minnesota used another six blocks and held OSU to a .118 clip to win the third set, 25-20. The Gophers led from the get-go as they opened the set on a 6-0 run on Santana's serve rotation. The Gophers would go up, 11-6 on a Buckeye service error. OSU pulled within one on a block for a 14-13 deficit, the Minnesota would go up 17-14 on a Hannah Tapp/Wilhite block. OSU again came within one at 19-18 on a Gopher service error, but the Gophers went on a 5-1 run, capped off on a block from Paige Tapp and Nora and an OSU attack error. Nora would put away the set on her 10th kill of the night to go up, 2-1.
Set 4: Ohio State tied up the match on a 29-27 fourth set win. The two teams endured 18 tie scores and eight lead changes before the Buckeyes earned the win. OSU held a 12-10 lead before the Gophers tied up the set at 12 on a kill by Nora and a kill by Wilhite. The two teams exchanged points throughout the set before the Gophers took a 24-22 lead on a Wilhite kill. The Buckeyes would get a block and would tie it up at 24 on an ace. Minnesota would attempt match point three times before OSU closed out the set with a kill from Erin Sekinger and Kylie Randall to tie up the match, 2-2.
Set 5: Minnesota came back and won the fifth set when it hit .429 and committed just one error to win it. 15-12. After a close first portion of the set, the Gophers were the first to reach the eighth point. After the two teams traded sides, the Buckeyes took a 10-8 lead. The Gophers, however, tied it up at 10 and against at 11 before Minnesota took the lead on a block from Schau and Hannah Tapp. The Gophers went up 13-11 on another block, this time from Hannah Tapp and Wilhite. OSU took a timeout and got a kill, but the Gophers closed out the match with back-to-back kills by Wilhite and Santana for the win.
