Maroon and Gold Even after First Two Games

Maroon and Gold each won one game on the first weekend of the Steak 'n' Beans series. Gold took the first matchup Friday 6-2, and Maroon tied the series with a 3-0 win Saturday. Both games were seven innings at Siebert Field.

Maroon outhit Gold 5-4 in the series opener, but Gold capitalized on its hits to claim the 6-2 win. Toby Hanson and Jordan Smith both hit two-run homeruns, and Dan Motl tripled and scored.

Alex Boxwell went 1-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases, an RBI and two of Gold's runs. On the mound, Tyler Hanson held Maroon scoreless for two innings, and Ben Meyer struck out five in 2 2/3 shutout innings. Lance Thonvold finished the game.

For Maroon, Matt Stemper double twice and scored once. Matt Fiedler was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and two steals, and also pitched two innings. Matt Halloran and Kyle Crocker drove in Maroon's runs. Jordan Jess pitched two scoreless innings between Gold's three-run innings against Fiedler and Tim Shannon.

In the second game, Maroon took a 1-0 lead in the first and added two runs later to win 3-0 and even the series.

Michael Handel was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, and Fiedler went 2-for-3 with two runs and three steals. Troy Traxler doubled and scored Maroon's other run. Kyle Crocker hit 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

Cody Campbell, Reggie Meyer and Brian Glowicki each pitched two-plus innings to combine for the three-hit shutout.

Boxwell and Luke Pettersen each hit a double for Gold in the second game. Toby Hanson had the other hit. Gold used Toby Anderson, Lucas Gilbreath, Fred Manke and Joe Martinson on the mound.

The series will continue this Friday at 3:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. Games are free and open to the public.
