Gophers Win Yale Tourney with 3-0 Win

The No. 18 University of Minnesota volleyball team swept Albany, 3-0, to win the Yale Invitational with three wins. Minnesota won 25-13, 25-11 and 25-19 for its final match.
Adrianna Nora was named the tournament MVP when she had 28 kills and hit .377 on the weekend. In Saturday's match against Albany, Nora had 10 kills, committed only one error in 18 swings. Daly Santana and Sarah Wilhite were also named all-tournament as well. Santana had 44 kills over the weekend, six aces and 28 digs. Against Albany, Santana had six kills in 17 swings and seven digs. Sarah Wilhite had 28 kills on the weekend, attempted 100 swings and had three aces and 25 digs.
In the win against, Albany, Minnesota had 37 kills to the Great Danes' 22 and eight blocks to six. The Gophers held Albany to a -.034 hitting clip, while they hit .236. Erica Handley started in the match and had 30 assists.
Set 1: Minnesota opened the first set on a 10-3 run after a kill by Nora and two attack errors by Albany. Wilhite put the set at 14-5 on an ace, while Hannah Tapp added a kill for a 17-7 lead. Minnesota kept its 10-point lead when Nora added a kill at 20-10 and Wilhite helped the Gophers go up, 22-10 on a block. Minnesota closed out the set on a kill by Wilhite and a bad set by Albany to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: Minnesota posted an 8-3, while a block by Hannah Tapp and Erica Handley put the Gophers up, 13-6. Minnesota added another block from Nora and Hannah Tapp for a 17-7 lead. An Albany attack error put the Gopher lead at 21-8. Minnesota finished off the set with a point on an Albany attack error and a kill from Santana to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: Minnesota took the match with a 25-19 third set win. Like the other sets, Minnesota opened up the lead early and took control of the set. The Gophers held a 10-2 lead when Paige Tapp had a block and forced Albany to take a timeout. After a Gopher service error, Minnesota would have four-straight kills from Wilhite, Paige Tapp, Santana and Alyssa Goehner, which forced another timeout. With an 18-8 lead, Albany would fight back and bring the set to 18-14 before Nora added a kill for a 19-14 lead. A block would from Molly Lohman and Handley would lead to set point, while Nora added the final point of the match and weekend.
