Minnesota has added a freestyle swimmer to open 2015. Michael Nunan is a freshman transfer, previously with the U.S. Naval Academy and Santa Clara Swim Club

Nunan made his Golden Gopher debut against Hawaii, where he placed first in the 200 freestyle with a 1:39.76.

GopherSports.com recently caught up with the Monte Sereno, CA native.

Gopher Sports: Why did you decide to come to the University of Minnesota and swim for the Gophers?

Michael Nunan: I really liked Coach Kelly. He understands that there are no short cuts or loop holes in the sport of swimming. You get out what you put in and sometimes it requires you to really grind it out if you are looking for those big drops come championship season.

GS: What are you looking forward to the most as you start your Golden Gopher collegiate career?

MN: I am looking forward to seeing how the team develops over the next several years!

GS: Thus far, what has been your best or most proud swimming memory?

MN: Most cherished memory was anchoring the 400 freestyle relay my senior year in High School at the Eastern championships. I touched the wall and looked up with a big smile. My teammates and I were the third high school to ever break the 3 minute barrier in the 400 freestyle relay in the sport of swimming.

GS: What do you like to do for fun besides swimming?

MN: I love to surf and travel. (So going to Hawaii was like heaven when I had free time...)

GS: How do you think you'll contribute to the Gopher swimming and diving program?

MN: I will contribute to the middle distance program with my individual events. As well as working on getting my speed down with new assistant coach Gideon Louw and his (Auburn Fast) knowledge so I can help on sprint relays.
