MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gopher Hockey senior captain Kyle Rau is one of 20 NCAA Division I hockey players who have been chosen as candidates for the 2014-15 Senior CLASS Award.
The award is presented annually to an NCAA I athlete in 10 sports (men's hockey, baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's lacrosse, softball, football, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball) based on achievement in the "Four C's" -- classroom, character, community and competition.
From the list of 20 candidates, a national committee will select 10 finalists later this winter. The 10 names will be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote that will include coaches, media, and fans. The award winner will be announced and recognized at the 2015 NCAA Frozen Four, which is set for April 9 and 11 in Boston, Mass.
A senior forward out of Eden Prairie, Minn., Rau is Minnesota's active scoring leader with 144 points (54 goals, 90 assists) in 141 games. Twenty of Rau's goals have been game winners, making the two-time team captain the NCAA's active leading scorer in game-winning goals. Minnesota is 75-12-7 all-time when Rau tallies a point and 37-3-0 when he tallies multiple points in a game.
In addition to earning Second Team All-America and Second Team All-Big Ten honors last year, Rau was honored as Gopher Hockey's John Mayasich Outstanding Student-Athlete Award winner last year and was recognized as the Henry L. Williams Legacy Award winner, which annually recognizes the top male student-athlete at the University of Minnesota who excels in competition and in the classroom while representing the values of the athletics department, earlier this year. Rau was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree as a junior last season and was a member of the All-WCHA Academic Team in 2011-12 in his first year of eligibility.
