Potomak Named WCHA Rookie of the Week

MINNEAPOLIS - Freshman Sarah Potomak led Minnesota with six points on two goals and four assists in the team's home-opening 7-0, 11-0 sweep over St. Cloud State. Potomak has been honored as the WCHA Rookie of the Week for her efforts.
Potomak led the Gophers with five points in Saturday's 11-0 win. She had two goals on two shots, recorded three assists, and was plus-five for the game. Potomak scored the Gophers' fifth and 11th goals of the game. She recorded assists on a shorthanded goal, a power-play goal, and an even-strength goal.
The game marked Potomak's first multi-goal game as a Gopher, and her three-assist, five-point effort also set career game-highs. In Friday's 7-0 win, Potomak assisted linemate Dani Cameranesi's power play goal and recorded four shots on goal as well. For the series, Potomak was plus-five with six shots on goal.
The Aldergrove, B.C., native ranks fourth in the nation with 2.25 points per game and is tied for third in the NCAA overall with 1.50 assists per game. Her nine points are tops among NCAA rookies and second overall in the WCHA. Potomak's 2.25 points per game ranks second among NCAA rookies as well. Potomak has at least one point in each of her four collegiate games so far, and she leads the team with nine points and six assists.
Potomak is the first Gopher to earn a WCHA weekly award this season. Kelly Pannek was the last Gopher to pick up rookie of the week honors on Jan. 7, 2015. In addition, Potomak's five-point game and six-point series are the most by a Minnesota freshman since Pannek recorded six points, including a five-point game, against St. Lawrence on Jan. 4-6, 2015.
