MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – Gopher Hockey will open the 2017-18 season with the Ice Breaker Tournament at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, the University of Minnesota announced on Saturday morning in conjunction with College Hockey Inc., and the University of Minnesota Duluth – the tournament’s host institution.
The Ice Breaker Tournament traditionally brings together four of the nation’s top teams – each from a different conference – and the 21st annual event will be no exception. Joining the Gophers (Big Ten) and Bulldogs (National Collegiate Hockey Conference) will be Michigan Tech (Western College Hockey Association) and Union (Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference).
The first round matchups, set for Oct. 6, 2017, have Michigan Tech taking on Union at 4 pm. CT with UMD and Minnesota facing off in the 7:30 p.m. night cap. The third-place and championship games will take place the following day at the 6,756-seat AMSOIL Arena.
Gopher Hockey will make its fifth appearance in the season-opening tournament in 2017. Minnesota’s three Ice Breaker Tournament titles, including back-to-back wins in 2013 and 2014, are tied for the most among NCAA programs with Boston University.
Ticket details for the 2017 Ice Breaker Tournament will be released at a later date through Minnesota Duluth.
