Heading into his second season on campus, sophomore Micah Coffey made 32 appearances at third base and as a designated hitter for the Gophers in 2015. The Batavia, Ill. native was perfect in his three stolen base attempts and was one of nine players who tallied 10-plus RBI last year. Gopher Sports recently checked in with Coffey to converse about life on and off the field.
Gopher Sports: Who is the biggest prankster on the team?
Micah Coffey: I would say Ty McDevitt is the prankster on the team. He's always calling guys the wrong names.
GS: What has been your favorite moment as a Gopher so far?
MC: Getting to play against the Minnesota Twins last year down in Fort Myers. Watching big-leaguers do their thing was so fun to watch.
GS: Who makes the best web gems currently in the majors?
MC: As a third baseman, I love watching Nolan Arenado because it's pretty much night in and night out that he makes big plays.
GS: What's the best piece of advice you've received from a Minnesota coach?
MC: Get comfortable being uncomfortable. You have to be able to perform in any situation.
GS: Do you have any superstitions?
MC: I always try to approach my at-bats in the same way every time, from the time I put on my gloves to the at-bat itself.
GS: Who is your favorite baseball player all-time?
MC: Hughie Jennings. Look him up.
GS: What are you looking forward to this season?
MC: Chasing a Big Ten title with the guys.
