MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 19 University of Minnesota women's soccer team heads to New Brusnwick, N.J. for the final road game of the regular season to take on the No. 12 Scarlet Knights of Rutgers University.
After dropping to Michigan State and tying 0-0 with Michigan last weekend, the Gophers are 11-3-3 overall and 6-2-1 in conference play.
Minnesota is tied with Penn State at second in the conference with Wisconsin edging ahead by three points.
Wisconsin (22 pts), Penn State (19 pts), Minnesota (19 pts), Rutgers (17 pts) and Michigan (17 pts) collectively make-up the top five in the conference, respectively.
In the NSCAA rankings this week, the Maroon and Gold landed at the No.18 spot.
Florida State, University of Virginia, West Virginia University, Stanford University and Brigham Young University make-up the top five.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Thursday, the Gophers hosted the Michigan State Spartans and fell 1-0.
In the ninth-minute of play, sophomore Jamie Cheslik scored off an assist from junior Marisa Oleksiak for the lone point on the night.
The game appeared to be a game of two halves as the Maroon and Gold emerged after the half with greater intensity than shown in the first.
Despite their efforts, Minnesota was unable to capitalize off the 14 shots and five corner kicks tallied throughout the night.
On Sunday, the Gophers went head-to-head against the Michigan Wolverines - a physical game that would draw four yellow cards.
With ending regulation tied at nil nil, the match would go into overtime. With both sides unable to find the back of the net, the full 110 minutes were played to end in a scoreless draw.
THE OPPONENT
Last Sunday, the Scarlet Knights met-up with the No. 10 Penn State Nittany Liones to end in exciting fashion in a 1-0 victory.
The lone and game-winning goal was provided by sophomore Colby Ciarracca off service from junior Madison Tiernan in the 52nd-minute of play.
Ciarracca's goal was her third of the season.
In the last four meetings with the Nittany Lions, Rutgers is undefeated against the conference foe. The team now has 13 shutouts on the season.
In the last 31 matched at home, the Scarlet Knights are 28-2-1.
LOOKING AHEAD
For the final home game of the regular season, Minnesota will host the Fighting Illini on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
Upon qualification, the Gophers could head to the Big Ten Championships. The quarterfinal round will feature four games on Sunday, Nov. 1. The semifinal round will be played on Friday, Nov. 6 with the championship set for Nov. 8.
