The No. 9 University of Minnesota volleyball team upset No. 3 Nebraska, tonight, in Lincoln, Neb. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 16-3 overall and are in sole possession of first place in the Big Ten, now standing at 8-1.

With the win in Lincoln, it marked the first time the Golden Gophers defeated the Huskers on their home court since October of 1980 when it was the AIAW era. The win over No. 3 Nebraska ties the Gopher record for highest ranked opponent win, which previously was Oct. 29, 2011.

Minnesota had four individuals with double-digit kills. Hannah Tapp hit .500 and had 17 kills, while Daly Santana had 23 kills and 72 swings. Sarah Wilhite had 11 kills, followed by Molly Lohman with with 10 and hit .429. Dalianliz Rosado had a match-high and tied a career-high 27 digs. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 54 assists. Despite being out hit .253 to .240 and outblocked 16-11, the Gophers held a narrow 83-81 dig advantage and a 71-67 kill lead.

Minnesota plays Iowa, Oct. 24, tomorrow night. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Iowa City, Iowa.

Set 1: Minnesota took a 1-0 lead off a 25-23 first set win. After trading points early, the Gophers took a three-point lead, 9-6, off a Hannah Tapp kill. The Huskers, however, erased the deficit and tied the set at 11-11 off a kill. Daly Santana gave the Gophers a narrow 16-14 lead with a kill, again at 17-15 and 18-16 after a long rally. Nebraska called a timeout and responded out of the break with back-to-back points to tie it up. The Huskers later took a 21-20 lead off a Gopher attack error as Minnesota called a timeout. Nebraska held a 22-20 lead before Minnesota fought back and rattled off three-straight on a Santana kill, a Nebraska attack error and a Wilhite ace for a 23-22 lead. The run caused Nebraska to call a timeout. After Nebraska tied the set at 23, Minnesota finished off the set with back-to-back Santana kills.

Set 2: The Gophers earned a 25-22 second set win as they hit .255 in the set to the Huskers' .212. Nebraska called a timeout as the Gophers led 11-8 after Santana provided back-to-back kills. Minnesota later pushed the lead to 17-13 off a Lohman kill. The Huskers cut the lead to 17-15 with two kills, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. Nebraska, however, came out of the break with three-straight to tie the set and take an 18-17 lead. The one-point lead forced Minnesota to call its second timeout. After the timeout, Minnesota went on a 4-0 run, capped off with back-to-back kills from Hannah Tapp and Santana, for a 21-19 lead. The Gopher lead caused a Nebraska timeout, but Minnesota came out of the break and continued to push the lead to 23-20 off a Hannah Tapp kill. A block from Santana and Lohman pushed it to set point, while another block from Lohman and Hannah Tapp pushed the match to 2-0.

Set 3: Nebraska earned a come-from-behind 26-24 third set win. Minnesota opened the third set with a 10-7 lead off a Santana kill. The Gophers pushed the lead to five at 15-10 as Hannah Tapp provided two kills, followed by a Rosado ace. A Wilhite kill pushed the Gopher lead to 17-11, while Paige Tapp added a kill for an 18-12 lead. Nebraska battled back and strung three-straight off a kill and two blocks for an 18-15 deficit, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. The Gophers responded with two points (Santana kill and Nebraska attack error) for a 20-15 lead, which forced Nebraska to call a timeout. The Huskers came out of the break with three-straight to cut the Gopher lead to two, 20-18. Minnesota called a timeout and Hannah Tapp ended the Nebraska run with a kill. Nebraska came back and tied the set at 21-21. The two teams traded points through 24, before Nebraska added back-to-back kills for a 2-1 match deficit and a 26-24 win.

Set 4: Gophers kicked off the fourth set with a 5-1 lead, which forced Nebraska to use an early timeout. Nebraska responded and later tied the set at 7-7. Minnesota took a 12-8 lead off back-to-back blocks, a solo by Paige Tapp, while she and Seliger-Swenson combined for another. After a pair of blocks from Nebraska, the Huskers cut the Gopher lead to 14-12, but Minnesota added a Santana kill and a Hannah Tapp kill for a 16-13 lead. A Lohman/Wilhite block pushed the score to 17-14, while a Paige Tapp kill put the lead to 18-14 as Nebraska called a timeout. With the Gophers holding a 21-15 lead, Nebraska went on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to two. The Gophers called a timeout, but Nebraska pulled within one five times, but Minnesota closed out the set with two Wilhite kills for the 3-1 win over Nebraska.
