Gophers in the Polls: October 6

Several Minnesota teams continued to rise in the rankings as other nationally-ranked teams either began or will kick off their seasons this week. Below is how the Gophers’ teams currently rank nationally.

Women’s Hockey - #1 (USCHO.com), #1 (USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine)
Last Week: The Gophers picked up a sweep on the road at Penn State, defeating the Nittany Lions by scores of 2-0 and 5-0 on Friday and Saturday night.
Coming Up: The team returns to Ridder Arena this weekend for a two-game set against St. Cloud State, Minnesota’s first home series of the season.
Men’s Hockey - #9 (USCHO.com)
Coming Up: The Gophers, who were also chosen second in the Big Ten’s preseason poll, open their 2015-16 campaign at home on Oct. 10, hosting Vermont in the 2015 Hall of Fame Game at Mariucci Arena.
Volleyball – #11
Last Week: Minnesota returned to its winning ways, sweeping Northwestern on Wednesday at the Sports Pavilion before edging seventh-ranked Illinois at home in a five-set thriller on Saturday night.
Coming Up: The Gophers travel to Maryland and Rutgers this weekend. Minnesota plays the Terrapins on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. tilt against the Scarlet Knights on Sunday.
Soccer - #14
Last Week: The Gophers saw their eight-match unbeaten streak come to an end in Madison after a 1-0 loss to the Badgers on Friday night.
This Week: Minnesota stays on the road, traveling to Nebraska on Thursday evening and to Iowa on Sunday afternoon.
Women’s Cross Country - #23
Last Week: Liz Berkholtz placed 14th overall to lead No. 23 Minnesota to a fourth-place team finish at the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday morning. One day earlier, Emily Castanias (4th) and Molly Eastman (17th) marked top-20 finishes at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational.
Coming Up: Minnesota is off from competition this weekend in preparation for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational and the Tori Neubauer Invitational the following weekend.
