Minnesota Defeats No. 17 Purdue in Four Sets

The No. 4 University of Minnesota volleyball team defeated No. 17 Purdue in four sets Sunday afternoon. The Golden Gophers won the first two sets 25-20, 25-21, fell in the third set 25-21, and finished the match in the fourth 25-14. The Gophers improve to 19-3 overall and 11-1 in the Big Ten Conference.
As a team, the Gophers hit .238 to Purdue's .156, and out blocked the Boilermakers 7.5 to 7. Daly Santana had 21 kills in 48 attempts (hit .312), while Hannah Tapp had 11 kills and hit for .417. Paige Tapp added nine kills, and Molly Lohman put up five blocks. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a match-high 47 assists, and Dalianliz Rosado had a team-high 15 digs.
Minnesota will host Michigan State and Michigan next weekend, with both matches starting at 7 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: After trailing 20-19, Minnesota closed out the set on a 6-0 run to take a 25-20 win and a 1-0 lead. The two teams went through 13 tie scores and four lead changes before Minnesota closed out the set. Minnesota built an 18-15 lead off kills from both Santana and Wilhite. The Boilermakers rallied back and tied the set at 18 off a block. After Purdue went up 20-19, Minnesota called a timeout. Out of the break, Paige Tapp added a kill, followed by a Santana kill and a P Tapp/Wilhite block for a 22-20 lead. Purdue called a timeout, but the Gophers responded out of the break with a Santana kill. After a Purdue attack error, P Tapp and Seliger-Swenson added the block for the win.
Set 2: Minnesota utilized a .389 hitting clip to Purdue's .275 to take the second set, 25-21, and a 2-0 lead. The Gophers had just two attack errors in the set and accomplished 16 kills in 36 attempts, while Purdue had 18 kills, seven attack errors in 40 attempts. After the two teams were tied at 12-12, Minnesota went on a 5-1 run for a 17-13 cushion. The Boilermakers battled back and tied the set at 17, but the Gophers went on another 4-0 run, capped off by a Santana kill and a H Tapp/Lohman block. With a 23-18 Gopher lead, the Boilermakers came back to cut the deficit to 23-21, but Minnesota closed out the set on a Hannah Tapp kill and a Rosado ace to go up, 2-0.
Set 3: Purdue earned a 25-21 third-set win. Minnesota erased a 9-5 deficit to come back and tie the set at 12-12. The two teams traded points until 15 when Purdue went on a three-point run for an 18-15 lead. Hannah Tapp provided back-to-back kills to cut the Purdue lead to 18-17 as the Boilermakers called a timeout. The Boilermakers pushed the score to 21-18 off a kill, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. Purdue, however, finished off the set with two kills to cut the Gopher lead to 2-1.
Set 4: Minnesota opened up the fourth set with a 9-5 lead before Purdue called a timeout. In that span, Paige Tapp added two aces and came out of the break with her third of that rotation for a 10-4 lead. Minnesota later pushed the lead to 13-5 off a Hannah Tapp kill, which forced the Boilermakers to take their second timeout of the set. Santana put the score at 15-9 off a kill and 18-9 off a Wilhite/Lohman block. Wilhite added a kill for a 23-14 lead, while Paige Tapp put it at match point. Santana put away the match with her 21st kill of the evening to finish off the win.
