Golden Gophers Brooke Zeiger and Rachel Munson were recognized by the Big Ten Conference today after their standout performances during the Arena Pro Swim Series at Minneapolis this past weekend. Sophomore Zeiger was tabbed Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week, while Munson was selected as Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week.
Zeiger raced to the top eight in three events and established two new Minnesota school records during the three-day long course meet. She finished fourth in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:42.49, racing between Olympians Katie Ledecky and Elizabeth Beisel. Her time established a new Minnesota school record in the event.
Zeiger placed seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 2:17.81. Her 2:15.89 during the prelims broke her own Minnesota school record. She also finished eighth in the 200 backstroke with a 2:18.46 and placed 12th in the 200 free behind teammate Samantha Harding with a time of 4:14.70. The sophomore now holds three Minnesota school records: 400-yard IM, 400-meter IM and 200-meter IM.
This is Zeiger's first honor as B1G Swimmer of the Week. The All-American was tabbed B1G Freshman of the Week two times last season.
Munson turned in a time of 1:09.36 in the 100 breaststroke, placing fifth in the field. She turned in a 2:31.37 in the 200 breast to top the "D" final for 25th place. Both of Munson's breaststroke races were Olympic Trials qualifying times. She also raced in the 100 freestyle, finishing with a time of 1:00.74.
This is Munson's second conference honor of the season, as she was last selected as B1G Freshman of the Week on Oct. 14.
Minnesota swimming will be back in action for the annual Jean K. Freeman Invite from Friday, Dec. 4 through Saturday, Dec. 5 at home.
