MINNEAPOLIS - Fifth-year senior Stacey Swatek has been honored as Minnesota's Big Ten women's cross country sportsmanship award honoree, the Big Ten Conference announced today. The award is given annually to a representative of each of the conference's 14 women's cross country programs.

The Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winners are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These students must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.

Swatek ran in her first Big Ten Cross Country Championship last weekend, placing 64th overall in 21:40.7. Her time was less than eight seconds off her career-best 6K time (21:32.9), which she ran earlier this season at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational to place 14th and lead Minnesota in the open race. Swatek has competed in five races this season, finishing among Minnesota's top 10 runners in all five meets.

The Wisconsin Dells, Wis., native completed her undergraduate degree in kinesiology at the University of Minnesota and enrolled in a Master's of Education program. She is currently student teaching in addition to competing for the Gophers.

The Big Ten also announced the individual award winners for the 2015 women's cross country season. A unanimous selection, Michigan's Erin Finn was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year, Wisconsin's Shaelyn Sorensen claimed Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and Penn State head coach John Gondak was unanimously selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year.
