Gophers Earn 12th-Straight Big Ten Win

The No. 4 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned its 12th straight Big Ten win in a four-set victory over No. 25 Michigan, tonight, at the Sports Pavilion. The 12-straight wins mark a school record, beating the previous 11, which was held in 2002. Minnesota is now 21-3 overall and 13-1 in league action.
Daly Santana led the Golden Gophers with a double-double when she had 23 kills, 15 digs. Hannah Tapp had 11 kills, followed by Paige Tapp and Sarah Willhite with eight. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 48 assists, and Dalianliz Rosado added 17 digs.
Minnesota travels to Northwestern, Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota erased an early deficit to come back and win the set, 25-23. Michigan opened up the first set with a 7-3 lead as the Golden Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota cut the lead to 9-7 off a Lohman kill and a Michigan attack error. The Wolverines later pushed the lead to 16-12, but Minnesota rattled off four-straight to tie the set at 16-16. After a Michigan attack error, Minnesota had a kill from Santana and Wilhite, while Wilhite and Lohman added a block to tie up the set. The tie forced Michigan to call a timeout. The two teams traded points and tied the set seven times before P Tapp and Lohman provided a block. Michigan called a timeout as the Gophers pushed it to set point. With the set on the line, Santana provided her seven kill of the set to put Minnesota up, 1-0
Set 2: Michigan hit .371 in the set to take a 25-19 win and tie up the match, 1-1. Minnesota called a timeout as Michigan took an 11-7 lead in the second set. After a 17-11 lead and a Michigan ace, the Gophers called their second timeout. As the Wolverines held a 22-14 lead, the Gophers attempted a comeback and went on a 4-1 run, capped off by a Paige Tapp kill and a 23-18 deficit. The Wolverines, however, finished off the set with a Gopher attack error and a kill to tie the match at 1-1.
Set 3: Minnesota took a 2-1 lead off a 26-24 set win after 10 tie scores. The Gophers trailed early at 9-5 as they took their first timeout. Minnesota trailed 14-11, but added three-straight to tie the set at 14-14. Minnesota held a narrow 19-18 lead off an ace by Paige Tapp. The Gophers held a 21-19 off a Santana kill and a Seliger-Swenson ace. A Hannah Tapp kill pushed the score to set point, only to have Michigan come back and tie the set off a kill and a block. However, the Gophers finished off set with a Paige Tapp kill and a Michigan attack error to take a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4: The Gophers closed out the match with a 25-22 fourth-set win. Minnesota opened the fourth set with a 6-2 lead, which forced Michigan to call a timeout. The Gophers pushed the lead to 12-3 off a Hannah Tapp kill. Minnesota held a 17-8 lead before Michigan responded with a 6-0 run, putting the Gopher lead to 17-14. Santana later put the lead to 19-15, but the Wolverines pulled within two at 19-17 and 21-19. Minnesota called a timeout and added three-straight points off a Paige Tapp kill, a P Tapp/Seliger-Swenson block and a Wilhite kill. With match point on the line, Michigan cut the lead to 24-22 before Paige Tapp finished off the match with her eighth kill of the net.
