Around the Bases with Austin Athmann

Austin Athmann has been a mainstay behind the plate in his two seasons as a Gopher. The junior from Cold Spring, Minn. has made 47 career starts at catcher and holds a .282 batting average through his freshman and sophomore campaigns. Most recently, Athmann was hand-picked by Major League Scouts to participate in the Major League Dreams Showcase in the Northwoods League. He also took part in the NWL Home Run Challenge, too. Athmann caught up with Gopher Sports to cover a slew of topics.
Gopher Sports: What are you looking forward to this season?
Austin Athmann: Having a great season both on and off the field with the team!
GS: What is your favorite baseball movie of all-time?
AA: The Rookie of the Year.
GS: What is one MLB stadium you would like to go watch a game in and why?
AA: Fenway Park just because there is so much history there and the field has so much character.
GS: If you could face any hitter/pitcher in the majors, who would it be and why?
AA: Aroldis Chapman because who doesn't want to face 100+ mph fastball?
GS: What is your go-to walk-up song?
AA: Country In Ya by Chase Rice
GS: Why did you choose the University of Minnesota?
AA: It was close to home so my family could continue to come watch me play, specifically my grandpa.
GS: Do you have any special talents outside of baseball?
AA: I can hold my own pretty well on a snowmobile, a wakeboard and on the golf course.
