Gophers to host Jean K. Freeman Invite

Minnesota swimming and diving is set to host the annual Jean K. Freeman Invite this Friday, Dec. 4 through Saturday, Dec. 5 in Minneapolis. Joining the Golden Gophers this weekend will be: Augsburg College, Augustana College, Carleton College, College of Saint Benedict, Concordia Cobbers, Gustavus, Hamline University, Macalester College, Saint Mary's University, South Dakota State University, St. John's University, St. Olaf College, University of Minnesota-Morris, University of St. Thomas, totaling 15 universities.
ABOUT JEAN K. FREEMAN
Freeman began her career at the University of Minnesota as a student-athlete from 1968-72 on the swimming and diving team. From there, she served as an assistant coach before being named head coach in 1973. During her 31 years as head coach, Freeman led the team to back-to-back Big Ten Championships (1999-2000), posted winning records in 27 seasons and coached 58 swimmers to All-American status.
Although Freeman's dominating numbers earned her a spot in the Minnesota history books, the swimming community appreciated her for other reasons. She cared for her athletes outside of the pool, and strived for student-athlete development more than just winning.
At last year's invitational, the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center was officially renamed to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Her legacy will live on, as Freeman is forever a Golden Gopher.
LAST TIME OUT
Minnesota swimming last competed at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Minneapolis among some of the biggest names in swimming. Following the meet, Brooke Zeiger and Rachel Munson were recognized earned B1G weekly laurels. The Gophers diving squad most recently competed at the Georgia Tech Invite where they posted 17 top-10 finishes over the three-day meet, and Yu Zhou earned her eighth B1G Diver of the Week honor.
IN THE RANKS
The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) currently has Minnesota men's swimming and diving at the No. 20 spot among NCAA Division I programs, while the Golden Gopher women hold the No. 22 spot.
