Gophers Set to Play at 5 p.m. Next Friday

The University of Minnesota volleyball program will play Illinois in the NCAA Regional Semifinal on Friday, at 5 p.m., at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. The second game, which is set for 7:30 p.m., will feature Hawaii and Penn State. Both matches will be shown on ESPN3.
Minnesota, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, enters the Regional Semifinal with a 28-4 overall record. The Golden Gophers punched their ticket to the Sweet 16 with a pair of sweeps of Jackson State (First Round) and Marquette (Second Round) on Friday and Saturday night. Minnesota advances to its 13th Sweet 16 in school history, dating back to 1993 when Minnesota made it to its first NCAA Regional Semifinal match. Most recently, the Gophers were at the Sweet 16 from 2013-2009, a five-year run.
Illinois enters the Sweet 16 with a 21-12 overall record. The Illini defeated Southern Illinois in straight sets and won a four-set decision over No. 15 seed Louisville to advance to the Regional Semifinal. Penn State comes to Des Moines with a 28-5 overall record. With a straight-set win over Howard, the Nittany Lions also won a four-set decision over Dayton to garner a Sweet 16 appearance. Hawaii will head into the Sweet 16 with a 28-1 overall record. The 'Bows defeated TCU in five sets in the First Round and Texas A&M in the Second to earn a trip the Regional.
