Three Gopher wrestlers competed unattached in Saturday's Buena Vista Open in Storm Lake, Iowa. Bobby Steveson led the way for the trio, turning in a 5-0 performance and winning the 197-pound championship, while Miles Patton placed sixth at 149.
Steveson marched through the field, recording his first collegiate major decision in the second round, a 20-8 victory, followed by his first collegiate pin in the semifinals, a fall that took just 42 seconds. Steveson has now won both collegiate tournaments in which he's competed after winning the Cobber Open title two weeks ago.
Patton went 6-2 on the day wrestling in his first open tournament since finishing an seven-match run as Minnesota's starting 149-pounder while Jake Short recovered from an early season injury. After dropping a 7-6 decision to Peter Stewart (Northern Iowa) in his first match, Patton piled up six straight wins in wrestlebacks, a streak capped by a 3-2 decision over Stewart, avenging his earlier defeat. Patton dropped the fifth place match on a takedown in sudden victory overtime.
Faris Karaborni joined Steveson and Patton in Iowa. Karaborni finished 2-2 wrestling at 184 pounds, taking victories in wrestlebacks on an 8-3 decision and a first-period injury default.
