Two multi-run innings lifted Houston to a 5-0 win over the University of Minnesota baseball team. The Golden Gophers (0-2) and Cougars (2-0) each had seven hits, but Minnesota did not capitalize on a bases-loaded situation with no outs in the first.
Connor Schaefbauer hit 2-for-3 with a double and a walk for Minnesota. Toby Hanson also went 2-for-3. Chris Iriart hit his second home run of the series, and Kyle Survance batted 2-for-4 for the Cougars.
The Gophers led off the game with three singles on Jake Lemoine's first four pitches. Dan Motl dropped a bunt single down the third baseline, Matt Fiedler singled through the right side and Schaefbauer singled to left. But Lemoine induced a flyout and notched two swinging strikeouts to escape unscathed.
Houston scored three runs in the second, including Iriart's solo homer. The Cougars tacked on two more in the eighth.
Lemoine struck out six and allowed six hits in five scoreless innings to get the win for Houston. Dalton Sawyer pitched the first 4 1/3 innings for Minnesota, striking out five batters. He retired the Cougars in order in three innings, but was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs in the second. Tim Shannon made his Gophers debut and pitched the final 3 2/3. Seth Romero pitched the final four innings for Houston to earn the save.

*Shannon retired seven straight batters in a stretch during the fifth to seventh innings.
*After the first inning, Minnesota had two runners reach scoring position, but both got there with two outs already on the board.
*Toby Hanson is 3-for-6 to start his college career.
