No. 10 Texas outhit Minnesota 17-4, including eight extra-base hits, in a 13-2 win. The Longhorns' leadoff batters reached base in all eight innings, and the Golden Gophers (0-4) scored just two unearned runs in the series opener in Austin.
The Longhorns (4-2) went up 4-0 and had two triples in the first two innings. Collin Shaw hit 3-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, a run and two RBIs. Michael Cantu (3-for-3) drove in five of Texas' runs and hit two doubles.
Connor Schaefbauer scored the Gophers' first run to cut Texas' early lead to 4-1. He led off the fourth with a double to the left-center gap. Matt Fiedler's grounder to second moved him to third, and he scored on a passed ball. Toby Hanson walked. Then Texas turned a double play to hold Minnesota to one run in the inning.
Minnesota did not score again until the ninth, when Texas had added nine more runs--four in the fifth and five in the eighth. In the ninth, Fiedler reached on an infield single and scored on a deep ball Michael Handel hit to right that went off Shaw's glove.
Ben Meyer (0-2) started for the Gophers and gave up five runs (four earned) in four innings, striking out two and walking two. Texas' Parker French (1-0) allowed an unearned run, struck out two and walked two in six innings. Jon Malmin finished the game to get his first save.
OTHER NOTABLES
*Minnesota had another threat in the fifth, as Tony Skjefte hit a one-out double down the left line. He advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was left on base.
*Meyer allowed leadoff runners in the third and fourth, but retired the next three batters in both cases.
*Toby Anderson pitched 3 1/3 innings in relief of Meyer, and Cody Campbell made his season debut in finishing the game. Anderson stranded two runners in the seventh when the Longhorns had a threat, but allowed five runs on seven hits. Campbell allowed three on four hits.
*In addition to Shaw and Cantu, Bret Boswell also had three hits for Texas. He was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs.
*Toby Hanson and Fielder have recorded hits in each of the Gophers' first four games. Schaefbauer has hit or walked in all four.
