One of the Gophers' best scoring threats came in the second when Tony Skjefte singled and Austin Athmann drew a four-pitch walk with one outs. But Josh Sawyer (1-1) got a fielder's choice and strikeout to end the inning with Skjefte on third. Dan Motl, Tyler Hanson, Matt Fiedler and Jordan Smith also singled in the game but only Motl reached second base.
Collin Shaw hit 2-for-4 with a run, two doubles and three RBIs for Texas. Zane Gurwitz also had a pair of hits with two runs. The Longhorns scored twice off Brian Glowicki in seventh. Jordan Jess finished the game with a scoreless inning.
The Gophers had leadoff base runners in three innings, and one-out base runners in two others, but no one made it past second base. Matt Fiedler, Matt Halloran, Tony Skjefte and Jordan Smith each had a hit for Minnesota.
Minnesota stayed within two of Texas until the eighth. Ty McDevitt relieved Lucas Gilbreath with two runners on base and no one out. After a fielder's choice retired the lead runner, consecutive RBI singles by Michael Cantu and Joe Baker made it 4-0. A two-out hit by Ben Johnson added another run.
Texas Starter Chad Hollingsworth (1-0) lasted 6 1/3 innings, giving up just two hits and two walks and striking out five. Ty Culbreth notched his second save finishing out the game. He struck out three.
