The University of Minnesota baseball team got its first win of the season, winning 3-1 at Florida Gulf Coast. Matt Halloran drove in all three Golden Gophers runs and three Minnesota (1-7) pitchers combined to hold the Eagles (5-5-1) to one run on eight hits. The Gophers recorded four hits, and each team made one error.
Halloran hit a bases-clearing single in the seventh to put Minnesota ahead 3-0. There were two outs, and the bases were loaded by singles from Matt Fiedler and Michael Handel and a walk by Tony Skjefte. Halloran drove the ball to right field, where Colton Bottomley had to make a long run and dive just to get a glove on it.
Minnesota starter Ben Meyer went five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, walking one and striking out five. Jordan Jess (1-0) got the win, pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Brian Glowicki struck out three and allowed a run in the final 2 2/3 innings to earn the save. Eagles starter Mike Murray (1-2) pitched eight innings, allowing four hits and a walk and striking out four.
Handel hit 2-for-4 with a run. Jake Noll hit 2-for-5 and Adam Eggnatz 2-for-4 for FGCU. The Eagles scored their only run in the eighth Bottomley led off with a double and scored on a fielder's choice grounder to second. FGCU left 11 runners on base.
NOTABLES
*Minnesota turned a 6-4-3 double play in the first inning after Florida Gulf Coast's first two batters reached base.
*Before the three-run seventh, the Gophers had an earlier scoring threat in the second, when Toby Hanson was hit by pitch and Michael Handel singled to center. But the next three batters flied out to right field.
*In the bottom of the fifth, the Gophers made a play at the plate to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. On a squeeze play with two runners in scoring position, Meyer fielded the bunt up the first base line and threw to Halloran, who made the tag at home. After a walk loaded the bases, a flyout to center ended the threat.
*Prior to Fiedler's hit in the seventh, Murray had retired 15 straight batters.
*In the bottom of the seventh, two Eagles reached base on infield hits and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A foul out to right, which Fiedler quickly relayed back to the infield to prevent a tag-up, and a fly to left ended the inning.
